» Pathways has been a prominent part of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside

Located for 9 years at the corner of Main and East Hastings street, the centre has been a resource to people in the community, connecting people to services, and assisting people along their 'paths to employment'. However, funding from the Ministry of Social Development has been withdrawn.

Pathways was envisioned as a special resource for a neighbourhood with a high concentration of people with limited incomes and often in transion; connecting people to local agencies and resources related to housing, health, employment, clothing, food, mental health, translation, basic education, substance abuse, and more. The centre also provided access to the Internet, computers, phones, faxes, and copier. The the centre was a success, seeing 200-250 people daily and enrolling @3000 annually, @60% being homeless.

But the Ministry has now adopted a new framework of WorkBC Employment Service Centres province-wide. One is located at 112 West Hastings Street. The new WorkBC Centre will assist job seekers, but is unlikely to be able to help those with more substantial barriers to employment. These are the people who will most likely 'fall through the cracks', and the result will be heightened anxiety within the DTES as well as heavier demands on police, health and justice system services.
